William Hauptman (born November 26, 1942 in Wichita Falls, Texas, United States) is an American writer and Tony Award winning playwright, best known for the book for the Broadway musical Big River, and various other plays and short stories. == Work == In 1985, Hauptman won the Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical for writing the Book of Big River. The work was the first play Hauptman had written in seven years.
